How to Recruit Publishers on Awin: Directory, Opportunities and Outreach
A brand-side guide to growing an Awin program: a profile that sells, the directory and recommendation tools, outreach partners answer, written approval criteria and the activation steps that turn joins into sales.

Launching on Awin gets your program in front of a large partner network, but a live program with no recruiting plan tends to collect a handful of coupon and cashback sites and very little else. The brands that grow on Awin treat recruitment as a weekly job: a profile that sells the program, a shortlist built with the directory tools, invitations that read like they were written for one partner, and a clear approval and activation routine. This guide walks through each step on the brand side.
If your program is not live yet, start with our guide to launching an affiliate program on Awin, which covers plans, tracking and commission groups. Everything below assumes tracking is tested and you are ready to bring partners in.
The short version
- Finish your program profile first: partners read it before they decide, and it is visible across the network.
- Build a shortlist with Partner search, Smart Search and Recommended partners under Partnerships, Overview.
- Invite with a personal message and a clear rate. Awin lets you send a reminder once an invitation is more than 7 days old.
- Review every pending application against written criteria, and think hard before switching on auto-approval.
- Activation is where most programs stall: welcome email, regular updates and short-term incentives for new partners.
Get your program profile ready first
Your program profile is the page partners use to judge you, and Awin says it is visible to every partner on the network once your program is live, including partners who have not joined (Awin help: Program profile). It shows your logo, categories, contact details, cookie attribution period and, once you are paying partners, your payment status and average payment time.
Before you send a single invitation, make sure the profile answers the questions a good partner asks:
- What do you sell and to whom? Use the program overview for two or three plain sentences, not a mission statement.
- What do you pay? Your default rate, and any higher rate for new customers or a category, so the offer is clear before they apply.
- Which partner types do you want? Say so. Awin suggests stating it in the "More about this program" section, and it saves you declining applications later.
- Who do they contact? Awin recommends a dedicated partner email address, for example partners@yourbrand.com.
Pick your categories carefully as well. Awin notes that partners use categories to discover programs, and you can select more than one.
Publisher directory filters
In the new Awin platform, partner discovery lives under Partnerships, Overview (Awin help: Find partners for your program). There are three tools worth using together.
Partner search
You can search by partner name, publisher ID, website URL or promotional type, then filter results by status, promotional type, sector and region. Each result carries a status icon, so you can see at a glance who is new and open to invitations, who already works with you, who has a pending application and who has ended or been declined. Awin suggests sorting newest to oldest to find recently joined partners, which is a good weekly habit: new partners are often the most responsive.
Smart Search
Smart Search lets you describe the partner you want in your own words, such as "fashion influencers in Europe", and returns matching profiles with a match score. Awin is clear that the results are suggestions, not recommendations, so treat them as a starting list and check each site yourself.
Recommended partners
Awin's recommendation engine groups suggested partners by goal: best matches, increasing conversion rate, brand awareness, average order value or revenue. Use the goal that matches your current problem. If your program is all coupon traffic, for example, the brand awareness list is a better place to look than revenue.
Whichever tool you use, filter by the five promotional types Awin uses (Content, Display, Email, Search and Other) and decide in advance which you want. In our experience, content partners such as creators, review sites and communities bring more new customers, while discount code, cashback and loyalty sites more often convert people who were already buying (Awin help: Partner types overview). Our guide to recruiting quality publishers beyond coupon sites explains how we weigh the two.
Opportunity Marketplace
The Opportunity Marketplace is where partners list paid or incentivised placements: email slots, homepage takeovers, sponsored content, social posts and category features. On Awin Classic you find it under Publishers, Search, Opportunity Marketplace, and you can filter by payment type (for example a CPA increase or a fixed tenancy), sector and type of space, then click Make Offer to start a conversation (Awin help: Opportunity Marketplace). Awin notes that this feature is currently available only on Awin Classic.
It is a useful way to meet larger partners who rarely answer cold invitations, but it is a paid channel. Agree what you are buying in writing, prefer a CPA increase over a flat fee until you have seen a partner perform, and measure each placement against the same period without it.
Bring the partners you already have
Your fastest early wins are usually partners who already know your brand. Awin offers three routes:
- Migration from another network. If you are moving from another network, Awin says a grace period is agreed to move partners and activity across, and it provides a sample migration email (Awin help: Migrate partners from another network). Our affiliate program migration checklist covers the full move.
- Express partner sign-up. For a creator or affiliate who is not on Awin yet, express sign-up onboards them in a few clicks.
- Your own website. Awin recommends a recruitment page, usually linked from your footer, with why partners should join, what you pay and your Awin profile link (Awin help: Utilize your website to recruit partners).
If you were a ShareASale merchant, your partnerships were transferred to Awin in the upgrade; our guide to ShareASale for merchants in 2026 explains what changed. Customers, newsletter subscribers and creators who already tag you are all worth a direct invitation. In our experience they are much more likely to become active partners than strangers from a directory.
Outreach that gets replies
From any partner profile you can invite the partner with a personal message, set their commission rate and optionally add a publisher tag, or contact them first before inviting (Awin help: Recruit and manage partners). Awin's own tip is that personalising the invitation significantly increases your chances of acceptance. If an invitation was sent more than 7 days ago, you can send a reminder from the profile.
What we put in a first message:
- Why them. One sentence that proves you looked at their site or channel.
- Why your product fits their audience. Not why your brand is great in general.
- The offer. Rate, attribution period and anything extra: samples, an exclusive code, a launch bonus.
- One easy next step. Accept the invite, or reply with a question.
An example we would send to a content partner: "Hi Sam, your guide to minimalist travel packing is exactly where our compression cubes belong. We pay 10% on every sale with a 30 day attribution window, and we can send a set for you to test before you write about it. If that sounds useful, accept the invite and we will get the sample out this week." Replace the numbers with your own; the shape is what matters.
Keep a simple tracker of who you invited, when, and the reply. A steady weekly batch of well-researched invitations beats a single mass send. Our affiliate recruitment playbook covers outreach across every channel, not only Awin.
Approval criteria
Incoming applications appear under Partnerships, All partnerships, Pending partners, with name, website, promotional type and sector. To approve, you choose a commission rate (required) and can add a message and a publisher tag. To decline, you select a reason, which Awin says is not shared with the partner.
Write your criteria down so approvals are consistent. Ours usually include:
- A real, active site or channel with content that matches your category.
- A promotional method that fits your terms, for example no bidding on your brand name if you do not allow it.
- An audience in the countries you ship to.
- No signs of copied content, fake reviews or unrelated coupon spam.
Awin can switch on auto-approval for all incoming requests if you contact support, but it warns that you will have less direct control over which partners promote your brand. For most new programs we keep approvals manual for the first few months and review the queue at least weekly, because slow approvals cost you the partners who were most keen.
Activation: turning joins into sales
In our experience, many partners who join a program never send a sale unless someone gives them a reason to. Awin's tools for this:
- Welcome email. On Awin Classic you can set an automatic welcome email under Account, Partnership Settings, with tags for the partner's name, ID and your program name (Awin help: Communicating with partners). Include your best-selling products, current offers and a direct contact.
- Regular updates. The Communication Center under Toolbox sends emails to all or selected partners. Awin recommends contacting partners at least once a month and no more than two to three times a week.
- Short-term incentives. Bonus Manager on Awin Classic pays automatic bonuses when partners hit monthly thresholds, such as a number or value of approved sales (Awin help: Bonus Manager). A first-sale bonus for new partners is a simple way to use it.
- Personal contact with top partners. Awin suggests finding them in the publisher performance report and talking to them by email or phone.
Rates matter too. Our guide to affiliate commission structures explains how to set a rate that leaves room for a new-partner bonus without hurting margin.
When to pay for help finding partners
If you are on a self-managed plan, Awin sells a Publisher Gap Analysis: a curated list of partners you are not yet working with, by industry, complementary sector or partner type (Awin help: Publisher Gap Analysis). Awin describes the fee as small and says the add-on is limited to two purchases per calendar year, per program. It is worth buying once you have run the directory tools yourself and want a second view. If you are weighing plans, our Awin Access explainer sets out what the self-managed plan includes.
If you run programs on more than one network, the same recruiting process applies elsewhere: our guide to recruiting publishers inside CJ Affiliate shows how it differs there.
