Awin for Advertisers: How to Launch an Affiliate Program on Awin

A brand-side guide to launching on Awin: which plan to choose, how MasterTag tracking works, commission groups, validation, finding publishers, what you actually pay and what to watch in reporting.

Awin is one of the largest affiliate networks in the world, and since ShareASale closed on 6 October 2025 it is also where former ShareASale merchants and publishers were moved. For a brand, that means a big ready-made partner base and published, self-serve pricing. It also means a platform with its own way of doing tracking, commissions and validation, and a few settings that are hard to change once you are live.

This guide walks through launching an affiliate program on Awin from the brand side: which plan to pick, how the tracking works, how to set up commission groups, where to find partners, what it costs and what to watch in your reporting. Every platform fact below comes from Awin's own pricing pages, help centre or terms, linked in each section. If you are still deciding between networks, start with our guide to choosing an affiliate network.

The short version

  • Awin suits retail and ecommerce brands, especially those selling in the UK and Europe, and it is now the home of the former ShareASale network.
  • Access (self-managed, published price) is the usual starting plan. Accelerate and Advanced add automation, more commission rules and managed service.
  • Install the MasterTag on every page and keep the awc parameter intact through redirects, or you will lose sales.
  • Set your auto-validation period to match your returns window before launch. It cannot be switched off.
  • Recruit actively: the directory, the Opportunity Marketplace and your own existing partners all matter more than waiting for applications.

Who Awin suits

Awin works across many sectors, but its strongest fit is retail and ecommerce: fashion, beauty, home, travel, electronics and similar categories where partners such as content sites, cashback and loyalty programs, voucher sites, comparison sites and creators drive sales. Awin's pricing pages describe a directory of more than one million partners, and its Access sign-up page notes that this now includes the ShareASale publisher base (Awin Access).

In our experience Awin is a particularly good match when you sell in the UK or Europe, when your audience overlaps with deal and loyalty partners, or when you are an ecommerce brand coming from ShareASale and want to keep those partners. For B2B software and recurring subscriptions, a platform built for SaaS partners is often a better fit; our SaaS affiliate guide covers that side.

Awin Access vs Accelerate vs Advanced

Awin publishes three advertiser plans on its US pricing page:

PlanPublished price (US)Who it is for
Access$49 per month plus a 3.5% tracking fee per transaction; first month free; 3 month minimum termSelf-managed programs, smaller brands and first programs
AccelerateFrom $99 per month plus a 2.5% tracking fee per transactionTeams that want automation, APIs, richer reporting and the option of managed service
AdvancedCustom pricingEnterprises needing custom reports, attribution rules and private networks

The UK page lists Access at £99 plus VAT per month and Accelerate from £199 plus VAT, with the same tracking fee percentages (Awin UK pricing). The tracking fee is charged on top of your partner commission. Awin's own example: on a $100 sale with a 6% commission, the partner gets $6 and Awin gets $3.50.

The practical difference for most brands is commission flexibility. Awin's feature comparison shows Access allowing up to three commission groups using rules such as product ID, product category and new or existing customer, while Accelerate and Advanced allow unlimited groups with more rules, including voucher code, publisher and transaction date. If you already know you need many partner-specific or coupon-specific rates, factor that in. We cover Access in more depth in Awin Access explained.

Applying and onboarding

For Access, you request information on Awin's sign-up page and receive an email with a link to the online application (Awin says to allow a few working hours for it to arrive). A few things to know before you apply:

  • Payment method. Access programs pay by automated direct debit, set up during the application, and Awin says this cannot be changed later. Invoices arrive twice a month and are collected 8 to 12 days after the invoice date (Awin help).
  • Launch window. The US Access terms on Awin's site (a version dated April 2023, so confirm this in your own agreement) ask the advertiser to complete tracking integration and commercially launch within 20 days of the agreement's effective date (Access terms). Have your developer time booked before you sign.
  • No demo account. Awin says it cannot offer demo access before you open a program, so plan to learn the platform after sign-up using its help centre and tutorials.
  • Two interfaces. Awin is running its new platform alongside Awin Classic while features move across gradually (Awin help). Some tools, such as the Opportunity Marketplace, are currently in Classic only.

Tracking: the MasterTag

Awin tracking is built around the MasterTag, a JavaScript container that Awin says should be added unconditionally to every page of your site, including the order confirmation page (Understanding Awin MasterTag). It sets a first-party cookie from the awc parameter that Awin's redirect adds to your landing URL, which is how tracking keeps working as browsers restrict third-party cookies.

Awin's developer docs add two warnings that cause most broken setups we see (Advertiser MasterTag):

  • If your site redirects visitors or rewrites URLs on landing, the awc parameter must be passed through. If it is stripped, the sale is not attributed.
  • The tag should not go on pages that display or process payment details or other personally identifiable information.

Alongside the MasterTag you send the conversion data on the confirmation page. On Shopify, WooCommerce and Adobe Commerce (Magento), Awin offers plugins that handle much of this, and its setup wizard covers custom sites. Test a real order end to end before you invite anyone, and check that the order value, currency and commission group arrive correctly. The MasterTag also powers Awin's technology partner plugins, which Awin says need either the MasterTag on every page or an Awin ecommerce plugin.

If you run other affiliate networks or channels, set up de-duplication at this stage too. Our post on running a program on multiple networks explains how Awin's channel parameter works.

Commission groups

Commission groups are how you pay different rates for different products, customers or partners. In Awin Classic you create them under Commission, Rules, Commission Manager (Commission groups). Points to get right first time:

  • The group code is permanent. Awin says the code that links tracking data to a group cannot be edited after creation, and neither can the transaction type (sale or lead).
  • Name groups for partners. Partners see group names, so "New customer" is better than an internal code.
  • Start simple. A default rate plus one or two groups (for example new customers, or a low-margin category) is enough for launch.
  • Test each group. Awin suggests running a test transaction through its tracking diagnosis tool to confirm the group fires.

How to set the rates themselves is covered in our guide to affiliate commission structures.

Validation and the auto-validation period

Every tracked sale arrives as a pending commission. You approve it, amend it or decline it within your validation period, and anything you have not reviewed is approved automatically when the period ends (Understanding commission validation). Awin lists legitimate reasons to decline, such as a cancelled or returned order or a sale that came from a different marketing source.

Awin says the auto-validation period cannot be disabled, is set to mirror your returns window, and on Access can be up to 67 days (Auto-validation). Our advice: set it to your real returns window plus a few days for processing, and no longer. Partners notice slow payment. Awin shows an average payment time on your program profile and recommends validating at least monthly, ideally every two weeks.

On Shopify, Awin's app can decline cancelled orders and adjust partial refunds automatically once your store is set up for it, which removes most manual validation for simple stores.

Finding and recruiting publishers

Launching on a network does not bring partners on its own. Plan recruitment from day one:

  • Search the directory. Use Awin's partner search, which filters by promotional type, sector and region, and invite partners directly rather than waiting for applications (Find partners).
  • Bring your existing partners. If you are moving from another network, Awin says a grace period will be agreed for the move, and you can send partners a link to your program profile (Migrate partners). Our migration checklist covers the rest.
  • Invite partners not yet on Awin. Creators and smaller sites you already know can be onboarded with Awin's express sign-up.
  • Use the Opportunity Marketplace. In Awin Classic, under Publishers, Search, Opportunity Marketplace, you can browse paid placements such as newsletter slots, homepage features and sponsored content, filter by payment type (a CPA increase or a fixed fee) and make an offer (Opportunity Marketplace).
  • Ask for a gap analysis. Self-managed advertisers can request a Publisher Gap Analysis listing partners in your sector or complementary sectors that you are not yet working with. Awin limits this add-on to two purchases per calendar year per program (Publisher Gap Analysis).

Approval rules matter as much as volume. Decide in advance which partner types you accept, how you treat voucher and cashback sites, and whether you allow brand-term bidding, then put it in your program terms. Our affiliate recruitment playbook goes deeper on outreach.

Fees: what you actually pay

Your monthly cost on Awin has three parts: the plan fee, the tracking fee on each validated sale and the partner commissions themselves. As an illustration using Awin's published Access rates (our arithmetic, not an Awin quote): a brand with $20,000 a month in validated affiliate sales at an 8% commission would pay $1,600 in commission, $700 in tracking fees and the $49 plan fee, about $2,349 in total, or roughly 11.7% of affiliate sales. Bonuses, paid placements and any technical integration add-ons sit on top.

Awin's pricing page does not list a joining fee. The US Access terms Awin links today are dated April 2023: they define a joining fee without publishing an amount (it is set out in the application form) and a $150 fee for each reintegration of your tracking. After the initial term, either side can end the agreement with 14 days' written notice. Because those terms are dated, check every figure in your own application form before you sign.

Reporting: what to watch

For the first three months, Awin's own guidance is to focus on learning the platform, building visibility and attracting partners. The numbers we check weekly on a new Awin program:

  • Active partners, meaning partners sending clicks and sales, not just joined.
  • Revenue concentration: how much comes from your top five partners and how much from voucher and cashback sites.
  • New customer share, if you track customer status.
  • Decline rate and average payment time, because both affect whether partners keep promoting you.
  • Total cost of sale, including the tracking fee, not just commission.

Our post on affiliate program KPIs defines each metric and how to read it, and the launch checklist lays out the first weeks step by step.

Our view

Awin is a strong first or second network for ecommerce brands, and the Access plan makes it one of the cheapest ways to get onto a large network with published pricing. The work that decides results is the same as anywhere: clean tracking, sensible commission groups, fast validation and steady recruitment. Awin is also one of the networks in our four-network case study, where we ran it alongside CJ, Impact and Rakuten.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Awin cost for advertisers?
Awin's US pricing page lists Access at $49 a month plus a 3.5% tracking fee per transaction, with the first month free and a 3 month minimum term. Accelerate starts at $99 a month plus 2.5%, and Advanced is custom priced. You also pay the commissions you set for partners.
How long does it take to launch on Awin?
Most of the time goes on tracking integration and testing. The US Access terms on Awin's site (a version dated April 2023) ask advertisers to integrate tracking and launch within 20 days of the agreement's effective date, so book developer time before you sign.
What is the Awin MasterTag?
It is Awin's JavaScript tracking container. Awin says it should be added to every page of your site, including the order confirmation page, but not to pages that handle payment details. It sets a first-party cookie from the awc parameter, which must not be stripped by redirects.
Can I move my existing affiliates to Awin?
Yes. Awin says a grace period will be agreed for brands moving from another network, and you can send partners a link to your program profile. Partners not yet on Awin can be onboarded with its express sign-up.
